EVAN HASTINGS

(he/him)
Creative Arts Therapist (AThR). Drama Therapist (RDT).
Kia ora, I’m Evan Hastings, and I’m deeply passionate about the transformative power of theatre and the arts. As a Drama Therapist, Creative Arts Therapist, and Academic with over two decades of experience, I’ve dedicated myself to using creativity as a tool for healing and social change.
I did a Master’s degree at the California Institute of Integral Studies in Counseling Psychology and Drama Therapy. From there, I founded Shadow Liberation, a theatre initiative focused on sexual violence prevention, which has led me to work across 18 countries. Through a blend of Drama Therapy, Theatre of the Oppressed, and innovative Shadow techniques, I create safe spaces for communities to explore and address trauma.
I’ve had the privilege of teaching at esteemed institutions like Harvard University, Lesley University, University of Otago and Azim Premji University. My facilitation practice extends beyond traditional classrooms to diverse settings, including prisons, conflict zones, hospitals, and community spaces.
I’m committed to fostering dialogue and understanding through theatre, and I’m proud to serve on the boards of organizations dedicated to arts-based healing and social change, like The MIECAT Institute and Drama-Therapy India.
Evan lives in Bengaluru, India, and facilitates Holding Space Therapeutic Arts Studio training events. Evan also offers professional practice supervision (online).
